Kriya Yoga, a spiritual science rooted in ancient yogic practices, has been taught and popularized by some of the most revered masters in the history of Indian spirituality. Among them, Lahiri Mahasaya and Mahavatar Babaji hold a special place, with their teachings guiding seekers toward enlightenment and inner peace. Yogi Satyam, a modern Kriya Yoga master, has continued this tradition, making these profound teachings accessible to contemporary readers. In this article, we'll explore the essence of Kriya Yoga, drawing on The Holy Science, a key text of this tradition, and the teachings of these revered masters.
1. What is Kriya Yoga?
Kriya Yoga is a meditative practice focused on breathing techniques and inner awareness. Rooted in ancient traditions, Kriya Yoga was introduced to the world by Mahavatar Babaji, a mystical figure said to have attained an immortal state of consciousness. Kriya means "action," and in this context, it refers to spiritual action or inner cleansing aimed at freeing the mind from the limitations of the ego and desires. Practitioners believe that Kriya Yoga can speed up spiritual evolution, helping individuals progress on their path toward self-realization.
The practice of Kriya Yoga involves specific breathing techniques that help align one’s life energy with the spine, fostering greater concentration and internal balance. These techniques, when practiced regularly, purify the mind and body, elevating the practitioner’s consciousness.
2. Teachings of Lahiri Mahasaya
Lahiri Mahasaya, a key disciple of Mahavatar Babaji, is one of the foremost teachers of Kriya Yoga. Born as Shyama Charan Lahiri in the early 19th century, he had a spiritual encounter with Babaji in the Himalayan mountains, where he received initiation into Kriya Yoga. Lahiri Mahasaya's life and teachings demonstrate that Kriya Yoga is not limited to monks or renunciants but is also accessible to people leading worldly lives. He taught that enlightenment could be attained while fulfilling one's responsibilities, an idea that resonates deeply with people today.
According to Lahiri Mahasaya, the ultimate aim of Kriya Yoga is to achieve "Kaivalya," or liberation. This state is marked by unity with the divine and a dissolution of the ego. He emphasized the importance of regular practice and inner discipline, urging his students to remain humble, compassionate, and detached from worldly desires.
In Lahiri Mahasaya’s view, Kriya Yoga is a science of the soul. It offers a systematic approach to quiet the mind, dissolve karma (the effects of past actions), and experience direct communion with the Divine.
3. Mahavatar Babaji – The Immortal Yogi
Mahavatar Babaji, the mysterious and revered yogi, is credited with reviving Kriya Yoga in modern times. Little is known about his life, as he lives in seclusion, and only a few advanced disciples have had the privilege to meet him. Babaji is described as an eternal yogi, ageless and wise, who dedicates his existence to guiding humanity toward higher spiritual realms.
The essence of Babaji’s teachings is love and service to others, which he considers the highest form of worship. Babaji also emphasizes the importance of inner silence and meditation. His teachings serve as a reminder that spiritual progress is possible for everyone, regardless of their social or personal circumstances.
4. The Holy Science – The Sacred Text of Kriya Yoga
The Holy Science, written by Swami Sri Yukteswar, a disciple of Lahiri Mahasaya, is a foundational text of Kriya Yoga. In this book, Yukteswar offers a comparative study of Eastern and Western spirituality, harmonizing the teachings of the Vedas and the Bible. He highlights the universal nature of spiritual truth, suggesting that different religious paths ultimately lead to the same divine reality.
The book emphasizes four stages of spiritual progress:
Dharma (Righteousness): This first stage involves living in harmony with natural laws and developing virtues like compassion, honesty, and humility. It serves as a foundation for the spiritual path.
Artha (Wealth or Purpose): In this context, wealth isn’t purely material. It signifies inner richness gained through spiritual practices, which helps overcome ignorance and desires.
Kama (Desire): In the spiritual journey, desires are understood and purified rather than suppressed. Desire, when aligned with divine purpose, transforms into devotion.
Moksha (Liberation): The final goal is liberation or union with the Divine, which comes from transcending the limitations of ego and experiencing oneself as part of the greater whole.
Swami Sri Yukteswar also explains that Kriya Yoga is an essential tool for balancing the energy within and quieting the mind. By controlling the breath, a person can calm the mind, enter a state of deep meditation, and ultimately achieve liberation.
5. Key Teachings from The Holy Science
Below are some core teachings from The Holy Science:
Unity of All Religions: Sri Yukteswar stresses that all religions teach the same universal truths. By moving beyond dogmas and focusing on spiritual practice, one can find common ground across different faiths.
Importance of Breath Control: Kriya Yoga centers on controlling the breath, which influences the mind. The act of conscious breathing purifies the mind and draws one closer to the Divine.
The Concept of Aum (Om): The book teaches that Aum, or Om, is the primordial sound of the universe. Meditating on this sacred sound connects practitioners with the divine energy that permeates all creation.
The Role of Karma and Reincarnation: According to The Holy Science, karma plays a central role in determining one’s path across lifetimes. However, Kriya Yoga helps in reducing the burden of karma, allowing for spiritual progress.
Stages of Spiritual Evolution: Spiritual evolution is a gradual process. It requires patience, discipline, and unwavering dedication to transcend ego and unite with the higher self.
6. Modern Teachings of Yogi Satyam
Yogi Satyam, a contemporary teacher of Kriya Yoga, has made significant contributions to explaining these ancient teachings in a way that resonates with modern audiences. According to Yogi Satyam, Kriya Yoga is a scientific approach to spirituality that transcends religious or cultural barriers. He emphasizes that by practicing Kriya Yoga, one can live a more fulfilled, joyful, and purpose-driven life.
Yogi Satyam advocates for simplicity and humility in one’s spiritual journey
